More Thoughts on Poetry: Illuminating Shadows

Composed on February 18, 2006

Poetry is ...
When you're staring into a chasm
On a cold, dark evening
Pelted by rain and sleet
And your head spins
As loneliness presses in
From all sides,
And the depths below
Rise to meet you.

Poetry is ..
When your skin is crawling,
And you don't know if it's from fear
Or a spider.

Poetry is ...
When vision fades as a shadow nears,
All thoughts and senses fail
And your entire body is numb with fear.

Poetry is ...
When your eyes refuse to open
In dread of what may
Or may not be seen.
When your mind tells you it's a nightmare,
But you know it's not.

Poetry is ...
When letters become icy fingers
Clutching at your throat,
Thoughts become echoes of ghastly moans and shrieks,
Words reek of death and decay,
And sentences and phrases paint pictures
Of shadows spilling upon your soul.

Poetry is ...
An unopened door
With something wicked waiting beyond,
As your hand compulsively reaches for the doorknob,
And you can't stop it from turning.

Poetry is ...
When the light shines brightly,
But the shadow does not flee.
When doubt sucks hope from your heart,
And your mind trembles in despair.

Poetry is ...
A perception of evil
In the deepest recesses of your mind
As darkness muffles every scream.
